If a nail trim is turning into a fight, more force is rarely the smartest next step. Sometimes the better plan is more time, a shorter session, or a different approach at the next visit.

Nail care is one of those small grooming jobs that can become a very big event for the dog who dislikes having their feet touched.
Some dogs are finished before they have had time to think about it. Others need a slower introduction to the tool, a different position, or a little more patience with one particular paw.
That is why we do not treat every dog nail trim exactly the same way. The goal is straightforward: shorten the nails carefully, smooth rough edges when appropriate, and make the appointment as manageable as we reasonably can for the dog in front of us.

Clip, Grind, or Use Both?
Dog nail clipping and dog nail grinding solve the same basic problem in different ways. There is no prize for using one tool on every dog.
Nail Grinding
A grinder shortens the nail gradually and can leave a smoother finish, but some dogs need time to get used to the sound and vibration.
Clipping + Grinding
For some nails, clipping can remove the initial length and grinding can be used for careful finishing around the remaining edge.
The Dog Gets a Vote
The method may change when a dog is comfortable with one tool but clearly struggles with another. A technically perfect finish is not worth making the whole visit unnecessarily difficult.

“As Short as Possible” Isn't Always the Right Goal
Nail length is only part of the picture. Every nail has a sensitive quick inside it, and its position determines how much length can be removed safely during that visit.
That is especially important with dark nails, where the internal structure is harder to see from the outside. The practical approach is controlled trimming rather than chasing an arbitrary shortest possible length.
Dogs whose nails have become very long may benefit from more frequent maintenance instead of expecting one appointment to completely reset the nail length.
When Paw Handling Is the Hard Part
Some dogs are perfectly relaxed through bathing, drying, brushing, and haircuts — right up until somebody reaches for a foot.
Tell us before the appointment if your dog pulls the paw away, freezes, vocalizes, panics, growls, snaps, or has previously been unable to complete a nail trim. Knowing that before we start is much more useful than discovering it halfway through.
Dogs who simply need a softer pace may benefit from our gentle grooming approach.
